The London Climbing Guides opinion

The Mile End Climbing Wall is a bouldering paradise and has some of the highest walls without roped protection we have ever seen. Don't let this put you off as it also has the friendliest and most relaxed atmospheres of any of the climbing centres in London. A mishmash of bouldering spots, a variety of top roped and lead sections, decent training areas such as "The Board Room" and the infamous "Monkey room" which make Mile End a must visit for all London climbers.

The Centre

Opened in the late eighties and are housed inside an old pipe engineering works, located within Mile End Park, a 5(ish) minute walk from Mile End Tube Station. The Mile End Climbing Wall is actually maintained by the registered not-for-profit charity 'DEVELOPMENT through CHALLENGE' - promoting personal development through challenging physical activity, especially to the young person. Every penny they earn goes back into the development of the centre and it's facilities. This is why we love them :-)

Climbing at Mile End

Adults - Mile End caters for the complete novice through to the seasoned professional offering a range of courses on and off site. If you are a competent climber check out the registration information below. If not check out the 'no climbing experience' section below.

Children - You should always check with the centre before climbing with children but overview information below.

Unfortunately they do not accept young people aged 8 or over onto any of our supervised sessions.

However, adults (over 18) can supervise a maximum of 2 children within the centre with no lower age limit. This rule applies regardless of whether the adult is themselves climbing. The adult needs to be a registered member of Mile End, and needs to fill in a supervision form before starting to climb. The children will be under the supervision of the adult at all times within the centre and no formal instruction will be given by Mile End Staff or Instructors. Climbing is undertaken at the supervising adults' own risk.

No climbing experience?

If you have limited or no previous experience of climbing, Mile End will show you around the centre and explain the basics of safe bouldering. After you’ve completed the induction tour, you’ll be left to climb for as much time as you can. This is unsupervised and at your own risk, and you won’t be registered to use the rope climbing area. It costs £12 and this include registration, climbing, the induction tour, shoe-hire and a locker

Taster session

So you want to try climbing, but you’d prefer to spend your first time under the watchful eye of a qualified instructor? Or maybe you’re not sure if a beginner’s course is right for you and want a one-off session to see if it’s the right thing for you.

The Taster session has a maximum group size of 6 and gives you an hour and a half of supervised climbing with the opportunity to try both bouldering and top-rope climbing. The sessions are available to anyone over 14 years old, and must be booked in advance. It doesn’t provide full instruction to become a ‘competent climber’, for that you’ll need our Beginners' Course.

Beginners course

The Beginners Course is the best way to go from climbing zero to hero! 6 hours of tuition from our qualified instructors, taking you through everything you need to know to become an independent and unsupervised top-rope climber. Discover the basics of movement on the wall, find out how to handle ropes and harnesses – and how to use simple rope systems. Master this introductory course and then progress to the next level.  Many aspiring climbers start this way; upon completion of the course you’ll receive £5 off a month’s unlimited pass, giving you the opportunity to consolidate your new-found skills.

Other Facilities/Information

Locker Deposits - Mile End run a really nice scheme where people are asked to to consider donating their 50p locker deposits to us as a simple way of us getting a bit more cash to build new walls. Donations so far have helped to build the cave area, update the board room and have recently helped with the costs of the fantastic new overhanging walls in the main room.
