The London Climbing Guides Opinion

The Reach is South East London's largest climbing centre based in an industrial complex just off the Thames River, a mere stones throw from the Thames Barrier. One of the most recent additions to the climbing circuit opening its doors in Jan 2010, we feel The Reach offers a lot to the London climbing circuit.

The Centre

The Reach Indoor Climbing Wall, located right by the Thames, between the Thames Barrier and the Woolwich Ferry, opened its doors in January 2010. Their facilities have been constantly developing and they are already one of the most impressive walls in the country.

This spectacular climbing facility has been designed to be enjoyed by climbers of almost any age or ability, from the most formidably experienced altitude chaser or thrill seeker to the complete novice; from fitness fanatics to leisure-loving layabouts...

Registration / Membership / Discounts

The membership fee (£4) is a one-off registration payment which allows adults with climbing experience to climb unsupervised at The Reach. Climbers must agree to and sign The Reach's conditions of use to become a member.

To register, climbers must be able to:

- Put on a climbing harness properly
- Attach a rope to the harness using either a rethreaded figure of eight or bowline knot
- Use a belay device to 'lower off' and to secure a falling climber

New climbers

Unfortunately, if you haven't climbed before it isn't as easy as just turning up and climbing up the wall. To climb safely you need to understand the hazards and be able to use the equipment correctly.

We recommend that people new to climbing either book onto a Taster Session or sign up for a more extensive Basic Skills course where you can find out how to handle ropes and harnesses, tie the essential knots and belay another climber safely.
